Over-emission of extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) may increase the risk of later development of renal scarring.
N. Ishito and colleagues from the department of urology, Kurashiki Medical Center, Japan, have noted that renal scarring can occur with ESWL monotherapy for the treatment of renal calyceal stones. As a result, they evaluated a large series of patients treated with ESWL to assess the relationship between this treatment and late renal scarring.
