Beta 2 Glycoprotein 1 Antibodies Implicated in Antiphospholipid Antibody Syndrome

Antiphospholipid antibody syndrome (APAS) in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) appears to involve not only positive titres of anticardiolipin antibodies, but also positive anti-beta2 glycoprotein 1 antibodies in association with a history of clotting disorder.

 ESRD patients with APAS are considered at high-risk of post-transplant thrombosis. Presence of anticardiolipin antibodies (ACA) has been thought to characterize APAS, but some more recent studies have also implicated beta 2 glycoprotein, a 40-kD plasma protein.

 Researchers in the departments of pathology and surgery at The University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, Texas, United States, studied serum samples from 169 ESRD patients waiting for renal transplants. Enzyme-linked immunoabsorbent assay was used to test for ACA and anti-beta 2 glycoprotein 1 antibodies.
