A new minimally invasive, laparoscopy-assisted nephrectomy technique is a safe for removing viable kidneys from healthy donors.
Physicians led by Dr. R. Watanabe, division of urology, department of regenerative and transplant medicine, Graduate School of Medical and Dental Sciences, Niigata University, Japan, performed laparoscopy-assisted live donor nephrectomies in 11 living kidney donors since September 2000.
At the start of the gasless surgery, the physicians created a 7-cm, pararectal, upper abdominal incision and three trocars via a retroperitoneal approach. They next created a working space using a balloon dissection technique and lifted the abdominal wall using a metal retractor attached to the margin of the abdominal incision.
Another metal plate, which was attached inside to the abdominal wall, was also raised. Kidney dissection took place from the skin incision under both direct vision and via a magnified view on a computer monitor.
