Austrian investigators subjected nephrogenic adenoma biopsies from kidney transplant patients to histochemical analysis. According to their report in The New England Journal of Medicine for August 29, these lesions within the urothelial mucosa of the urinary tract are derived from tubular cells of the renal grafts.
The benign tumors can cause hematuria, discomfort on voiding, or urinary obstruction. It was previously believed that they represent metaplastic proliferations of resident urothelial mucosa.
