HIV Status Should Not Determine Kidney Transplant Status

HIV patients with end-stage renal failure fare just as well as non-HIV infected counterparts when undergoing a kidney transplant, a prospective study from the MCP Hahnemann University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States, shows.

Kidney transplant in this population has typically been denied because it was feared that this patient group would have increased morbidity and mortality from the procedure. However, most of these patients are under 50 years old and have an average life expectancy of 10 – 20 years due to compliance with anti-retroviral medication.

“Many of the patients in their 20s and 30s do not have overt AIDS, but are carriers of the HIV virus,” Dr. Anil Kumar, chief surgeon at the Renal Transplantation Center at Hahnemann said. “Because they are young, they don’t want dialysis and are actively seeking a kidney transplant.” Dr. Kumar, lead author of the study, presented his findings at the 19th International Congress of the Transplantation Society.
