There is a possible connection between malnutrition, inflammation and atherosclerosis in haemodialysis patients Previous recognition that chronic inflammation is the basis of both atherosclerosis and malnutrition led researchers from Baskent University Faculty of Medicine in Ankara, Turkey to question a link between these disorders and haemodialysed patients.
Consequently, they designed a study to undertake comparisons between nutritional indices and inflammatory parameters of haemodialysis (HD) patients.
Researchers selected two groups. Group one comprised 59 Haemodialysis patients with atherosclerosis. Group two included 57 HD patients without the disorder. They were matched for risk factors for atherosclerosis by age, gender, smoking practices, hypertension and the duration of haemodialysis.
