Independent Link Between Gout And Kidney Stones Suggests Shared Etiology

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Aug 02 – Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey III (NHANES III) point to an independent association between nephrolithiasis and gout. This suggests to Dr. Gary Curhan of the Channing Laboratory in Boston, and colleagues, that the two entities share common underlying pathophysiological mechanisms.

“There have been previous reports of an association between gout and kidney stone disease [but] none have used a nationally representative population [such as] NHANES III and rarely have they adjusted for body mass index, a risk factor for both gout and stones,” Dr. Curhan told Reuters Health.
