COPENHAGEN, DENMARK — July 18, 2002 —
Haemodialysis patients with haemoglobin levels greater than 11 g/dL appear to have lower rates of mortality and hospitalisation, according to an analysis of the Dialysis Outcomes and Practice Patterns Study (DOPPS).
The analysis suggests there are benefits when European best practice guidelines are followed in haemodialysis patients. The current guidelines call for a target haemoglobin level greater than 11 g/dL. The results were presented here July 16 at the XXXIX Congress of the European Renal Association – European Dialysis and Transplant Association (ERA-EDTA). DOPPS, a prospective, observational study of haemodialysis practices and patient outcomes, collected data from randomly selected haemodialysis units in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy and Spain from 1998 to 2000.
