Older renal patients who are transferred to hemodialysis from peritoneal dialysis because of their illness are at greater risk of death
. Comorbid conditions are frequent in dialysis patients, according to investigators at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and University of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah. In their study of 97 patients on peritoneal dialysis, they examined the effects of age and comorbid conditions on technique failure, as indicated by transfer to hemodialysis.
They also considered hospital costs, death and kidney transplantation among patients who began peritoneal dialysis at the University of Pittsburgh outpatient dialysis unit from January 1993 to December 1998. Their outpatient records and the Medical Archival Retrieval System database were reviewed for comorbid conditions, demographic characteristics and outcomes. A modified version of the comorbidity (Charlson) score, which was colinear with age, was used without an age component.
