No Association Between Increased Antidiuretic Hormone With Kidney Donor

An association was noted between laparoscopic donor nephrectomy and increased antidiuretic hormone release, apparently related to increased intra-abdominal pressure, according to Dutch researchers.

This relationship is not associated with clinically significant changes. The researchers acknowledged transient renal dysfunction may occur as a result of increased intra-abdominal pressure during laparoscopic donor nephrectomy, attributed to impaired renal blood flow and induction of neurohormones.

Nevertheless, a poor understanding remained of the relationship between antidiuretic hormone secretion and increased intra-abdominal pressure. Consequently, doctors at the Erasmus Medical Centre in Rotterdam designed a study to evaluate plasma antidiuretic hormone levels with graft function. Thirty patients who underwent a laparoscopic donor nephrectomy were recruited. Prior to insufflation their plasma, antidiuretic hormone (ADH) levels were collected. They were further collected during surgery, following desufflation and 24 hours after the procedure was complete
