NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Apr 23 – In patients with proteinuric nephropathy, the decline in renal function may be reduced by adding an angiotensin II receptor blocker to established angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor therapy.
"Adding losartan therapy to patients receiving the maximum dose of an ACE inhibitor reduces the urinary level of transforming growth factor-beta-1 (TGF-beta-1), which is a major mediator of profibrotic effects in patients with diabetic nephropathy," Dr. Rajiv Agarwal, from Indiana University, Indianapolis, told Reuters Health.
