Patients with heart failure post MI may benefit from nitrate therapy

The use of nitrates in patients with severe left ventricular dysfunction after acute myocardial infarction may reduce the need for additional diuretics as well as lead to less LV dilatation, according to the results of a study published online in the January issue of the American Heart Journal. (2003; 145: e1.)

 In the study researchers randomised 92 patients with clinical or echocardiographic evidence of left ventricular dysfunction after acute myocardial infarction, to receive either 60mg of isosorbide mononitrate (ISMN) or placebo once daily. After 11 months no significant differences were noted for either invasively obtained haemodynamic parameters or for echocardiographic measurements between the two groups.
