Radiofrequency Ablation of Post-MI Ventricular Tachycardia Often Successful

Radiofrequency ablation can be safe and effective for ventricular tachycardia consequent to a myocardial infarction (MI), UK researchers report in the November issue of the European Heart Journal.

 In their paper, Dr. David O’Donnell and colleagues from the Freeman Hospital, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, report on 112 consecutive admissions for RF ablation of scar-related ventricular tachycardia.

 Patients who had had an MI within 21 days were excluded. These patients had an average of 12 episodes of ventricular tachycardia in the 30 days before ablation, and all had failed at least one antiarrhythmic drug regimen. Most of the patients had an ejection fraction less than 35% and more than one morphology of ventricular tachycardia, and 30% had hemodynamically unstable ventricular tachycardia, the researchers note.
