Oxandrolone Safely Increases Protein Stores in Acute Burn Injury Victims

The synthetic anabolic steroid oxandrolone safely and effectively increases prealbumin visceral protein stores in burn victims in a critical care setting.

The finding was presented here November 7 at CHEST 2002, the annual meeting of the American College of Chest Physicians. In a critical care setting, underweight patients tend to have poorer outcomes.

Oxandrolone is a testosterone analogue known to produce weight gain and restore muscle mass during catabolic illness. As a result, Bruce Friedman, MD, and colleagues from the Joseph M. Still Burn Center, Doctors Hospital Augusta, Augusta, Georgia, United States, tested whether oxandrolone would be of benefit in acute burn injury.

Dr. Friedman’s team randomised 40 patients who were critically ill with acute burns and on mechanical ventilation to receive 10 mg of oxandrolone twice a day or a placebo. The patients all received the same nutritional prescription, and none had problems with enteral feeding.
