Surgery Superior to Alcohol Ablation For Hypertrophic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy

For patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and left ventricular outflow obstruction, surgical myotomy-myectomy leads to better exercise test results than does septal alcohol ablation.

 That’s the conclusion of a study published in the October 15th issue of the European Heart Journal. Transcoronary alcohol septal ablation has been proposed as a less invasive alternative to surgical septal myotomy-myectomy for drug-refractory hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy, in which the anterior mitral valve leaflet contacts the intraventricular septum during systole, the authors explain.

However, the comparative aspects of the two procedures on exercise capacity remain uncertain.
