An aminoglycoside, given over a period of two weeks, should be included in antibiotic therapeutic management of patients with Bartonella endocarditis.
Researchers from hospitals and universities in Canada, England and France evaluated 101 patients diagnosed between January 1, 1995 and April 30, 2001 and with Bartonella endocarditis. They sought to define the best antibiotic regimen measured by the prognosis recovery, relapse or mortality.
The patients were diagnosed using immunofluorescence with a 1:800 cut off, polymerase chain reaction amplification of DNA, and/or culture findings of Bartonella species from whole blood, serum and/or valvular biopsy specimens. In addition, a standardised questionnaire was completed for each patient.
