The risk of HIV transmission per coital act is highest in the months immediately following seroconversion and again during terminal AIDS, according to results of a study of discordant couples in rural Rakai, Uganda.
The findings were reported here on February 11th at the 10th Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections. In an interview, Maria J. Wawer, MD, from Columbia University in New York, emphasized that the findings apply to heterosexual transmission.
“I cannot say if they would be similar for men having sex with men or for intravenous drug users,” she said. “But for heterosexual transmission, I think the rates in the United States and Western Europe would be similar.”
