Aspirin tolerant and aspirin intolerant asthmatics both appear to show the same clinical response when using the leukotriene receptor antagonist montelukast. Although most asthma patients benefit from treatment with anti-leukotriene drugs, clinicians at the Jagiellonian University School of Medicine Cracow, Poland, questioned whether a subgroup of patients who were aspirin intolerant, and with cysteinyl-leukotriene overproduction, would benefit most from anti-leukotriene treatment.
Twenty six mild asthmatics who were aspirin intolerant and 22 who were aspirin tolerant were enrolled into an eight-week single blind placebo controlled trial that compared their clinical response to montelukast. The investigators also searched for possible predictors of clinical response which would reflect the expression and production of cysteinyl-leukotrienes (cys-LTs).
