Excision Plus Brachytherapy May Obviate Mastectomy for Recurrent Breast Cancer

Local tumor excision plus pulse dose rate (PDR) brachytherapy is feasible and well-tolerated in women who experience a breast cancer recurrence following primary breast-conserving therapy (BCT), according to a new report.

Dr. Alexandra Resch and colleagues, from Vienna University in Austria, assessed the outcomes of 17 women who underwent local tumor excision plus PDR brachytherapy for breast cancer recurrence following primary lumpectomy and postoperative radiotherapy. None of the recurrent tumors had a classification higher than small T2.
