Leptin, the growth hormone associated with weight gain, appears to also be associated with the proliferation of both normal and malignant breast epithelial cells, according to results of experiments in mouse and human cells.
“It has been well established that obesity and/or weight gain are risk factors for postmenopausal breast cancer,” lead author Dr. Margot P. Cleary from the University of Minnesota, Austin, told Reuters Health. “However, the mechanism of action of linking obesity to this increased risk is not clear. Elevated serum estrogen and insulin levels that occur in obese individuals have been considered as possible links.”
