Citalopram Therapy Appears Safe During Pregnancy

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Sept 30 –

Women who use citalopram during pregnancy have uncomplicated pregnancy outcomes, according to a report in the August issue of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics. In addition, there is minimal exposure of the infants to the drug during lactation. In a prospective study, Dr. Tuija Heikkinen and colleagues from the University of Turku, Finland, investigated the safety and efficacy of citalopram in relation to concentrations of the drug and its metabolites during pregnancy and lactation.

Included in the study were 11 mothers being treated with citalopram and their infants and 10 matched controls. The researchers collected plasma and breast milk samples
