Sildenafil enhances vaginal engorgement in healthy postmenopausal women during erotic stimulation, but is not linked with any subjective effect on sexual arousal.
A single oral dose of the sildenafil as compared with placebo produced significant increases in vaginal vasocongestion in the sexually functional women in this study in The Netherlands. Subjectively, however, the women reported no difference between the two treatments in terms of their feelings of sexual arousal.
Dr E Laan and colleagues from the Academic Medical Center, University of Amsterdam, Amsterdam, conducted this randomised comparison of a single oral dose of sildenafil citrate (Viagra) versus placebo among 12 sexually functional women.
