AIDS 2002: Abacavir Appears Safe in Pregnant Women with HIV

BARCELONA, SPAIN — July 12, 2002 —

The use of abacavir for treatment of HIV-infected pregnant women appears to control virus in the women as well as prevents transmission of the virus without causing harm to the child. “Overall, abacavir appears to be well-tolerated and efficacious for use during pregnancy, both in the treatment of maternal HIV disease and in the prevention of perinatal HIV transmission,” said Ana Puga, MD, of the Comprehensive Family AIDS Program, Children’s Diagnostics and Treatment Center, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, United States.

She presented the results on July 10 at the XIV International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2002) Dr. Puga and colleagues reviewed the charts of 36 HIV-positive women and their children to determine outcomes.

One woman was on a stavudine, lamivudine, and abacavir regimen; the rest were treated with zidovudine, lamivudine and abacavir — 29 women were on lamivudine/zidovudine (Combivir) and six were on abacavir/lamivudine/zidovudine (Trizivir).

All the women delivered single children at full term, with the exception of one woman who delivered at 33 weeks. Thirty-five of the children were seronegative and remained free of infection according to tests performed at one month, four months, and six months after delivery.

The one child who was seropositive was born to a mother co-infected with hepatitis C who did not take medications during the pregnancy.
