The prevalence of headache in women with phenotypic hemochromatosis or the C282Y/C282Y genotype is 80% higher than in the general female population, according to a recent report.
In contrast, no increased prevalence of headache was noted among men with the condition, according to a report published in the Annals of Neurology for June.
Dr. Knut Hagen, from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim, and colleagues decided to study the link between the two conditions after realizing that a relatively high number of headache patients seen during the last year also had hemochromatosis.
The current population-based study involved 51,282 subjects who responded to a headache questionnaire and were screened for hemochromatosis.
