Twin Pregnancies After IVF May Have Advantage Over Singletons

VIENNA (Reuters Health) Jul 03 – The risk of miscarriage in twin pregnancies resulting from in vitro fertilisation is significantly lower than for singletons, research from Belgium shows. The finding suggests that embryos in twin pregnancies may have a better biological potential, but is not “an advertisement for twin pregnancies,” researcher Dr. Philippe Tummers told Reuters Health. Dr. Tummers and his team from the Infertility Centre at the University Hospital Gent in Belgium evaluated the miscarriage risk in couples that had used assisted reproductive technology.

 He told delegates at the European Society for Human Reproduction and Embryology that in any pregnancy, the miscarriage risk is generally estimated at 15%.
