New Dual-Action Osteoporosis Drug Protects Against Vertebral Fracture


LONDON (Reuters Health) May 14 –

An experimental osteoporosis drug that stimulates bone formation as well as prevents loss of existing bone effectively protects postmenopausal women against osteoporotic vertebral fractures, according to phase III data reported on Tuesday.

While existing osteoporosis therapies treat osteoporosis by preventing the resorption of old bone, strontium ranelate, being developed under the brand name Protos by French pharmaceutical firm Servier, is said to be the first drug of its kind to also promote new bone formation.
