Lidocaine On Fallopian Tubes Reduces Pain Of Sterilization

By Robert Short

Lidocaine instilled onto the Fallopian tubes of awake women undergoing laparoscopic sterilization with Filshie clips reduces pain scores.

This was the finding of a prospective, randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blinded, clinical trial involving 24 patients who were awake when they underwent laparoscopic sterilization with Filshie clips. Twelve patients had lidocaine 1% instilled onto the Fallopian tubes, 12 were in the placebo group.

Pain was assessed using visual analogue scales. Said Dr Susan Garwood, "Pain scores were lower in the lidocaine group than in the placebo group at clip application and after 15 minutes after operation." While there was no significant differences between the lidocaine group and the placebo group one hour after operation or discharge, more rescue analgesia was required in the placebo group and more side effects were seen.
