Fetal loss following amniocentesis is more common among older women

LONDON (Reuters Health) – Women older than 40 years of age are nearly twice as likely as younger women to experience fetal loss following second trimester amniocentesis, according to a report by Greek researchers.

Dr. George J. Daskalakis and colleagues, from the University of Athens, assessed the fetal outcomes of 5030 pregnant women who underwent amniocentesis between 16 and 21 weeks of gestation.

The study group included 708 women with vaginal bleeding during the current pregnancy, 298 women with a history of second trimester miscarriage or termination, and 4024 women without any risk factors for fetal loss.

The fetal loss rate for women over 40 years of age was 5.1%, significantly higher than the 2.54% rate for women 20 to 34 years of age, the authors report. Women with vaginal bleeding and those with a miscarriage or termination history were more than twice as likely as women without risk factors to experience fetal loss.

The decision to undergo amniocentesis, particularly in older women and those treated for infertility, is often difficult, the investigators note in the October issue of the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Therefore, it is important to have accurate information regarding the procedure's risks.

The current findings indicate "that many factors influence the likelihood of fetal loss following a second trimester amniocentesis and we believe that all this information should be offered to couples before the procedure," Dr. Daskalakis' team states.
