WESTPORT, CT (Reuters Health) – Limiting daily sodium intake to 100 mmol or less reduces systolic blood pressure (SBP) and pulse pressure (PP) more than daily walking does in postmenopausal women with elevated SBP, according to a report published in the August issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

Dr. Douglas R. Seals, from the University of Colorado at Boulder, and colleagues assessed the blood pressure-related outcomes of 35 healthy postmenopausal women with SBP between 130 and 159 mm Hg who undertook 3 months of daily walking exercise or moderate dietary sodium restriction.

Both interventions produced a significant decrease in resting SBP and PP, but the reductions were three to four times greater with sodium restriction, the authors note. In addition, sodium restriction produced a significant reduction in 24-hour SBP and PP, aortic pulse wave velocity, and carotid augmentation index, while exercise did not. The changes in aortic pulse wave velocity correlated with changes in SBP and PP.

"The greater reductions in SBP and PP associated with sodium reduction may be mediated in part by a reduction in the stiffness of the large elastic arteries in the central circulation," the researchers state.

They point out two limitations of the current study. "First, the population studied was almost entirely Caucasian. African-American and other minority women may respond differently to these interventions," they note. "Second, the 3-month duration of our interventions precludes extrapolation of the results to long-term BP control, which obviously is the ultimate goal of therapy."
