Extensive resections are possible for conservative breast carcinoma therapy when using oncoplastic techniques and concomitant symmetrisation of the contralateral breasts. Researchers from the Institutet Curie in Paris acknowledged that breast-conserving therapy was the standard therapy for women with breast carcinoma whose invasive tumours were no larger than 4cm.
However, cosmetic results for patients whose tumours were large, ill defined or badly situated were poor, and clear resection margins proved difficult to define. The researchers integrated a new surgical approach of oncoplastic techniques and concomitant contralateral symmetrisation procedures, which allowed for wider excisions and avoided breast deformities.
