Reversing a longstanding downward trend, overall rates of primary and secondary syphilis in the US appear to be increasing again and this has federal health officials concerned.
“2001 marks the first increase in the national syphilis rate since 1990,” Dr. Ronald O. Valdiserri of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in a telebriefing with reporters Thursday.
In the October 31st issue of the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, the CDC reports that primary and secondary syphilis cases in the US rose by 2% between 2000 and 2001, from 5,979 cases to 6,103 cases. As a result the overall syphilis rate increased slightly from 2.1 cases per 100,000 people in the year 2000 to 2.2 cases per 100,000 people in 2001.
