Intranasal mupirocin reduces post-operative Staphylococcus aureus infection in patients who were nasal carriers preoperatively, according to results of a trial reported in the June 13 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. Mupirocin did not alter the rate of infection in those without preoperative nasal carriage.
“Our results carry tremendous implications for reducing S aureus surgical wound and other hospital-based infections, and for preventing illness and saving lives,” lead author Trish M. Perl, MD, from Johns Hopkins University, says in a news release. “This is a terrific drug, but the downside is that resistance does develop with overuse. You don’t want to bathe the hospital in mupirocin. It is incumbent upon us as clinicians to use this drug in high-risk patients when studies support its use.”
