Concomitant treatment with immunosuppressive agents may enhance the efficacy of infliximab in patients with Crohn’s disease, suggest researchers in Belgium.
Infliximab is a chimeric monoclonal IgG1 antibody against tumour necrosis factor; treatment with it can result in antibody formation. To determine the clinical significance of these antibodies in Crohn’s disease, Dr Filip Baert and colleagues from University Hospital Gasthuisberg and Leuven University, in Leuven, examined 125 consecutive patients receiving infliximab infusions. Before, and then at 4, 8 and 12 weeks after each infusion, the investigators evaluated concentrations of infliximab and of antibodies against it, clinical data, side effects and use of concomitant medications.
