In stable asthmatic patients treated according to international guidelines over 3 years, airflow limitation progresses but at a nearly normal rate. Airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) continues to improve, however.
Dr. Toru Oga, of Kyoto-Katsura Hospital, Japan, and colleagues examined the longitudinal changes in airflow limitation and AHR in 81 patients with stable asthma. The patients were evaluated at baseline and every 6 months over 3 years for pulmonary function (expressed by FEV1) and AHR (expressed by the provocation dose that caused a 20% fall in FEV1 [PD20-FEV1]).
