When glucosamine sulfate (GLS) products are used as a therapeutic agent, they should conform to a standard in their description of the active ingredient, according to a report in the November issue of the Journal of Rheumatology.
Dr. Anthony S. Russell and colleagues from the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada, examined the content of active ingredient in over-the-counter GLS products. They used a high performance liquid chromatography system to analyze 14 commercially available GLS preparations. One non-glucosamine herbal mixture was used as a control.
