Results of outpatient treatment for children with severe malnutrition exceed the minimum international standards for recovery, default and mortality rates, according to a retrospective cohort study completed in Ethiopia.
As London-based investigators suggest in The Lancet for December 7, only patients with marasmic kwashiorkor or those with complications require inpatient care for a few days. That’s in contrast to the currently accepted strategy of inpatient therapeutic feeding centres that treat patients for weeks, and which requires a huge amount of resources, they note.
