Overall, deaths related to traumatic brain injury (TBI) continue to decline in the US, according to the latest surveillance figures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The exception is fall-related TBI-deaths, which have increased markedly among the elderly.
In 1989, the Federal Interagency Head Injury Task Force identified TBI as a “critical public health problem,” Dr. David J. Thurman of the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion and colleagues note in a Surveillance Summary in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report for December 6. Since then, the CDC has tracked trends in TBI-related mortality.
