Health plan sponsors anticipate saving millions as over-the-counter Claritin becomes readily available at drugstores nationwide and the prescription market for Claritin is eliminated, industry experts said this week. With Claritin expected to hit pharmacy shelves as early as mid-December, some employers and insurers also are considering limiting coverage of all non-sedating antihistamines by prescription.
That could shrink sales of Claritin-maker Schering-Plough Corp.’s own Clarinex as well as rival prescription medications Pfizer Inc.’s Zyrtec and Aventis SA’s Allegra, analysts said.
