Parent or guardian satisfaction was significantly worse when on-call coverage was provided by a nursing service than when it was provided by pediatricians, according to a survey reported in the November issue of Pediatrics. Because this resulted in lower compliance, the authors speculate about possible future alternatives.
“Medical advice by telephone has been a traditional part of most primary care practices, especially pediatrics,” write Thomas J. Lee, MHS, MD, from the University of California at Los Angeles, and colleagues. “Despite the potential for significant benefits, little medical research has been done to evaluate the process of telephone triage by nonphysicians.”
