Findings from an animal study suggest that long-term estrogen-replacement therapy (ERT) is not a useful treatment for Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and may actually worsen the memory dysfunction seen with the disease.
Short-term ERT has been shown to reduce cognitive decline in older women. Also, a recent review of several human studies concluded that while hormone replacement therapy may be useful in preventing AD, it does not appear to alter the clinical course of patients who already have the disease.
