Starting oral feeding within 48 hours of achieving full tube feeding allowed early preterm infants to switch completely from tube to oral feeding sooner, according to results of a study published in the September issue of Pediatrics.
“Early introduction of oral feeding accelerates the transition time from tube to all oral feeding,” write Chanda Simpson, MD, from the Pediatrix Medical Group of Texas in Fort Worth, and colleagues. “This not only allows earlier attainment of all oral feeding, but it also provides practice opportunities that enhance the oral motor skills necessary for safe and successful feeding.”
