Counseling by nurse practitioners could alter lifestyle behaviors of adolescents, according to results of a randomized trial published in the Sept. 7 issue of the British Medical Journal. “Change in behavior was slight but encouraging, and the intervention was well-received and relatively cheap,” write Zoe Walker, from the Royal College of General Practitioners in London, U.K., and colleagues.
This trial involved 1,516 adolescents, aged 14 to 16 years, from eight general practices in Hertfordshire, England. Subjects in the intervention group were given an appointment for a 20-minute consultation with the nurse practitioner to discuss health concerns and develop plans for healthier lifestyles, while the control group received usual care.
