Hard-fought gains in reducing the number of American women who smoke were nearly wiped out in the 1990s, as more and more adolescent girls picked up the habit, according to a new US Surgeon General report.
In fact, “current smoking among high school senior girls was the same in 2000 as in 1988,” according to the report released Thursday. Experts say more needs to be done to “de-glamorize” smoking among impressionable adolescents.
