People aged 65 to 74 years who sustain a fracture appear to be a high risk of future fractures at other sites.
This finding has emerged from an analysis of data in the UK General Practice Research Database by investigators at Southampton General Hospital, in Southampton, England, the University of Utrecht, in Utrecht, The Netherlands, and Procter & Gamble Pharmaceuticals, in Staines, England. The database contains the medical records of general practitioners.
The study population comprised all patients aged 20 years or older with incident fractures in 1988-1998. The investigators identified 119,317 women and 103,052 men who had at least one fracture during follow-up.
