Three more US states were added on Thursday to the list of those reporting suspected human cases of West Nile virus, which has killed nine people in Louisiana and Mississippi in an outbreak than now spans a dozen states.
Missouri, Ohio and Maryland were the latest to report suspected human cases of the disease.
In addition, three new cases of West Nile disease–a 70-year-old man and two women in their 40s–were confirmed in the Chicago metropolitan area on Thursday, bringing the total of human cases in Illinois to five.
