The first cloned calf from a Spanish-speaking country was born in Argentina a week ago. The 37-kg female Jersey calf, “Pampa,” was delivered by cesarean section after 278 days of pregnancy and an investment of $2 million.
Scientists who conducted the project consider Pampa s birth to be just a step towards obtaining cloned and genetically modified cows capable of producing more affordable human growth hormone (hGH) and other expensive medicines, they said this week at a press conference.
Within 4 years we may have a number of cows producing hGH in their milk, Dr. Carlos Melo, Research & Development Manager at Bio Sidus, a biotechnology company in Buenos Aires, told Reuters Health.
