According to a report in the August issue of Stroke, linoleic acid is protective against ischemic stroke. This protective effect may be the result of decreased blood pressure, reduced platelet aggregation and enhanced deformability of erythrocyte cells, the Japanese investigators speculate.
In a prospective nested case-control study, Dr. Hiroyasu Iso, of the University of Tsukuba, Japan, and colleagues examined serum fatty acids as potential risk factors for stroke. The team studied frozen serum samples from 7450 Japanese subjects between the ages of 40 and 85 years who participated in cardiovascular risk surveys. They identified 197 incident strokes and each case was matched with three controls
