The Italian government is sending a 600-page book on the appropriate use of medicines to doctors, nurses and pharmacists as the latest in a series of measures designed to control rising pharmaceutical costs.
“This guide reverses the usual path of scientific information, which is strongly orientated towards commercial names and brands. Instead, first it focuses on therapeutic categories and active principles, and then it mentions the products available on the market,” the health ministry said in a statement.
The guide lists all available drugs and is adapted from the British National Formulary (BNF). Along with clinical indications, preparations, side effects, dose recommendations, pharmacological options, and the weight of evidence for relative drug efficacy, the formulary–to be updated every 6 months–highlights price and reimbursement category for each drug.
