LONDON (Reuters) Jul 05 –
AIDS has already killed nearly 22 million people but a leading expert warned on Thursday that the global epidemic hasn’t peaked yet and the virus may never be eradicated.
A third or more people in some African countries are infected with HIV but Peter Piot, executive director of the Joint United Nations programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), fears worse is yet to come.
“I think we have to accept that this will be part of the human condition and that it may never go away,” he told Reuters in an interview ahead of the 14th International AIDS Conference in Barcelona next week. “It is unlikely we will have a vaccine that will be 100% effective and that will really stop all transmission.”
