Initial Cocaine Dependence Treatment Success Maintained Over Long Term

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Jun 21 –

In patients treated for moderate to severe cocaine abuse, 5-year outcomes are related to the duration of initial intensive treatment, according to results of the Drug Abuse Treatment Outcome Studies (DATOS). Furthermore, when treatment leads to cessation of drug use at 1 year, it is likely that the effectiveness will be maintained over the following 4 years.

Dr. D. Dwayne Simpson and associates at the Texas Christian University in Fort Worth evaluated 5-year follow-up interviews of 708 patients admitted to drug treatment programs between 1991 to 1993. Problem Severity Index (PSI) scores at admission were based on multiple drug use, alcohol dependence, criminal activity and unemployment. Other factors included in the PSI were low social support, presence of depression or anxiety, and lack of health insurance.
